How I Learned to Overcome My Fear
and Love Arik Sharon

Israel, 1997, video, 61 min., Hebrew with English subtitles.
Director: Avi Mograbi

US PREMIERE

With the 1996 election campaign approaching, director Avi Mograbi set out to make a film about an infamous and admired political figure, former Israeli cabinet minister and legendary army general, Arik Sharon. To the filmmaker's surprise, he finds Sharon extremely likable. In the course of the campaign, Mograbi sets aside his leftist political beliefs and gets surprisingly close to Sharon.

This ironic fictitious documentary tells the story of the film's making, which turns into a domestic melodrama threaded with nightmares about Sharon and arguments with his wife. The real story is of the impossible close encounter between left and right in present-day Israel. 1997 Berlin Film Festival.

Director: Daniel Wachsman

WEST COAST PREMIERE

Widely acclaimed Israeli filmmaker Dani Wachsman is no stranger to San Francisco. Two of his seminal works, HAMSIN (1984) and THE APPOINTED (1991) were presented in past SFJFF Festivals. This time Wachsman switches genres, directing a unique drama in a documentary style.

The story begins with a mysterious death near his northern Israeli home in the Galilee. Purportedly a suicide, many wonder whether it was murder. The prime suspects are all descendants of an ancient Pashor family. As the legend goes, the Pashors were one of the leading high priesthood dynasties that guarded over the Second Temple's treasury before it was plundered by Rome's King Titus in 70 C.E. Through revealing interviews, a conspiracy is uncovered in which the descendants dream of ancient treasures and an independent Galilee. 1996 Haifa Film Festival.
