Next Wave Spotlight: Oh, Hi!

Next Wave Spotlight

It’s a big weekend for Iris (Molly Gordon) and Isaac (Logan Lerman): their first weekend getaway. They’ve booked an idyllic house in the countryside to spend their days (and nights) basking in each other’s company. Side by side, they read books, gaze into each other’s eyes, share candlelit dinners, and dance under the moonlight. The trip is going well—like, really well. That is, until Iris asks Isaac where their relationship is headed and is met with a less-than-ideal answer. Unsatisfied, Iris decides to take their fate into her own hands. Writer-director Sophie Brooks (The Boy Downstairs, SFJFF 2017) turns the dreaded “what are we?” conversation—the qualm plaguing modern dating—into a charming and heightened romantic comedy in her sophomore feature.

With a witty script and stellar performances from an exceptionally talented young cast (including Geraldine Viswanathan, Zosia Mamet, John Reynolds, Polly Draper, David Cross, and Desmin Borges), Oh, Hi! is a sharp, satirical take on millennial dating and all the wild and unexpected places a weekend can go when love—or maybe even just a relationship—is on the line. —Anisse Elias
